Samarkand's Mahallas - Publication available online

With pleasure, I'm posting a link to my 196-page illustrative document highlighting the traditional neighborhoods, called mahallas, of Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Inspired by my first overland trip across Central Asia in 1995, I initiated research and documentation in 2010. Following a scouting trip in 2011 to select the specific areas of study, Gianmaria Zanderighi and Barbara West joined me for several weeks' field work in 2012 to photograph and to record details of the historic urban fabric.  We presented the preliminary document to UNESCO, Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 2015 and a third edition has been made available online at ARCHNET, the online resource of the Aga Khan Historic Cities Programme.
